Think about a time when you have: been driving a car and suddenly 'come to' and been unable to remember driving the last 20 miles...

found yourself lost in thought remembering someone or something from the past and suddenly 'come to' when someone or something has brought you out of your daydream...

You will probably be surprised to know that in both these examples you had, in fact, been in a state of hypnosis. The state of hypnosis is, therefore, a very natural state of relaxation and concentration - after all you stopped at all the traffic lights and you arrived perfectly safe! This state is often called 'conscious hypnosis'.

The art of hypnosis has been around for a very long time. The word comes from the Greek word hypnos meaning 'to sleep' , and while most people find it easier to close their eyes during hypnosis, hence an appearance of sleep. as can be seen from the two examples above, although we are in "an altered state", we are clearly not asleep. The state of hypnosis is, therefore, a completely natural state produced by the brain and, hence, is completely safe.

Healing yourself using hypnosis

In addition, this natural relaxed state enables the body to renew and heal itself. People are interested to learn, that when in the state of hypnosis, there is an increase in the number of lymphocytes produced (the body’s healing cells), and blood pressure and heart rate are reduced.

So hypnosis is a natural phenomenon produced by the brain to enable the mind and body to relax and heal itself. A person is aware of everything going on around them and can converse quite easily during the process.

Common questions about hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

A condition of calmness and relaxation combined with a state of heightened awareness and concentration. It is a non-addictive power for good and is a natural phenomenon of the mind.

Are there some people that cannot be hypnotized?
On the whole, no, although of course the degree varies from person to person. However, hypnosis should not be used with anyone who is mentally handicapped or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Are any drugs used?
None at all.

Will I be aware of what is happening?
Yes. Most people are surprised they can remember everything that has happened during the therapy.

So I'm not asleep then?
No, you are simply extremely relaxed.

Is there any cause at all for concern?
None whatsoever.
