New Evidence Demonstrates The Power Of Hypnotherapy Over Pain

60 year old hypnotherapist Alex Lenkei has used hypnotherapy to have bone removed from his thumb without anaesthetic. The removal involved chiselling, cutting and sawing in his thumb, but Mr Lenkei used hypnotherapy as his only painkiller.

It took Mr Lenkei only one minute to put himself under for the 80 minute operation at Worthing & Southlands Hospital. The surgery was required to remove a bone the size of a walnut from the base of his thumb. In order to do this the bone was smashed with a chisel, the bone ends sawed and then finally the remains were cleared with snippers. Obviously, this would generally be an extremely painful procedure, requiring anaesthetic, but in this case hypnotherapy was all that was required.

Following the surgery Mr Lenkei said "I remember at one point the surgeon asked for a saw, and I had images of this big thing like you get at B&Q - then he said, 'No, not that one, the little one', and I thought oh, that's all right then."

Throughout the surgery an anaesthetist, Dr Richard Venn, was available to provide pain relief if required, but this was never the case. He later said "What was interesting was that I was monitoring his heart, blood pressure and breathing rate all the time and they stayed exactly the same throughout - so he certainly wasn't experiencing any pain."

Mr Lenkei's surgeon believes that there could be a place for hypnosis in the NHS. He said that he recognised some people are anxious about using anaesthetic, so he was always looking for alternatives.

While this is an extreme case it clearly demonstrates how hypnotherapy can be used to relieve pain in many circumstances.
